New 103 Covid positive case in Odisha.
Odisha on Monday recorded the biggest spike in Covid-19 cases with 103 persons being tested positive. With this the number of corona positive cases in Odisha rose to 1,438.
Maximum new cases were detected among people who have returned to this state from other states and have been put in quarantine centres. The number of returnees in the the past few weeks moves towards the 3-lakh mark.
The returnees not following social distancing norms are pouring in from different parts of the state on a regular basis, creating a headache for the administration.
Yesterday, a video of a youth consuming liquor inside a quarantine centre in Keonjhar district has put the State Government on the back foot. The police arrested a youth on charges of supplying liquor to the inmates there. There are also reports of inmates playing cricket, cards and organising functions inside the quarantine centres which have put a lot of pressure on the administration.
The returnees on their way to Odisha in trains, are also jumping off trains being scared of put in the quarantine centres. On last Sunday, more than 200 migrants had fled from a special Shramik train in Ganjam after pulling the chain.
In Gajapati district on Sunday the migrants in one of the quarantine centre staged a demonstration demanding swab tests. After assurance by the authorities to go for a swab test, they withdrew the strike. As per the rules, tests are done only on those persons who show some symptoms.
On last Sunday, the Odisha Government brought a number of amendments in the rules relating to quarantine and reduced the number of quarantine period from 21 days to 14 days.
In the rural areas, a returnee will be kept in institutional quarantine for first 7 days and in isolation at home for last 7 days.
